Description
The office was over and everybody was going home. On the pretext of some work, he stood alone outside the office. The passersby watched him, everyone knew this was his routine. He too was very shameful of his habit. He was even tense and fearful but still he stood there because his desire to see her was aggressive and boundless. She would come, she would pass him and would disappear into the distance. Like the notes of serene music her steps would flow forward. She would pass him unseen like living ones pass unseen ghosts, like air passes hollow chambers, like a train passes barren fields. She wouldn’t even bother to give him a passing look. But he would wait for her, strain his eyes muscles to see her until her every trace faded into the evening.
If anybody, any day dared to comment on him,
He would reply, “Yes, I am like this, I am obsessed, crazy, and a mad lover.”
If anybody said, “You are infatuated.”
He would reply, “I am happy that I am infatuated with her.”
If anybody warned, “You will be fired.”
He would reply, “Do whatever, charge me with any law, any unbecoming, any indiscipline, pronounce even a death sentence, but I will continue to come, wait for her and see her fade away into the evenings.”
