What happens when a gung-ho-nothing-can-stop-me 21-year-old girl returns back to her country as a weary middle aged woman with a somewhat reluctant family in tow? How does she go about setting ghar-grahasti in a place she always thought as home, but which had unknowingly become alien to her? What happens to her picture-perfect idea of a close-knit family when she gets close enough to see the frayed edges? After years of following the corporate rat race in her pursuit of the American dream, can she deal with the challenges of being a housewife in a small Indian town? Can she slay the demons that have pursued her for life, now that she has more time on her hands? And finally, after years of touting India as home, how Indian is she really? This book captures fresh off-the-boat observations and insights of an Indian woman as she observes her country and her-self with the eyes of an adult. Back to Pavilion is loosely based on what the author, Poonam Mulherkar, and her family experienced as they started their journey of settling back in India.

  1. matt roberge

Wonderful book and very funny. Great read for anyone (especially moms) in the 35-45 years old range. While Poonam describes her own experiences I found her commentary and insights to be much more metaphorical. hard to believe she is a first time author

  2. Sandeep

Terrific book! Absolutely loved it! Poonam has a great sense of humour. Also loved the philosophical touch in many chapters. This book is a must read for all NRIs who are thinking of coming back to India

  3. Alee

This is a fantastic book everyone should read! It’s humorous, yet deep in thought and self reflection. Poonam makes you think about the choices you make and the path you follow in this light and humorous book. Highly recommend!
We should all write a book like this about our life’s jouriney and self discovery.
